Now that the ethnic conflict and war that plagued us for the last 3 decades or so, is history and the Presidential Election is over and the Parliamentary Election is in the offing, the need of the hour is to stand together to build our nation. Hence our theme for this Aquinas Walk : Aquinas youth for nation building.
It was William James of Havard University who said, "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind".
The Founder Fathers of Aquinas, and we who are at Aquinas now believe, that the foundation of success, regardless of a chosen field, is the attitude of mind. In our commitment to the Tertiary Education of our youth for the last 56 years, Aquinas University College has taken giant strides, together with our youth to change the attitudes of mind of our educated youth.
The empowerment of our youth to bring about this change of attitude is a felt need of our times for Nation Building which is a gigantic task entrusted to us all. The beautiful life of brotherhood that our youth leads at Aquinas campus, together with their fellow students of different nationalities, races, religions, castes and ethnicities and with the presence of a considerable number of Buddhist clergy and the Religious nuns, is already a stepping stone for Nation Building.
Our fervent prayer and endeavour is that our youth, as catalysts of a better tomorrow be exemplary leaders of a society that would bring about true peace and harmony.
With this mission in mind we have organized the Aquinas Day and Annual Walk 2010 to be held on Sunday, March 21 at 08.00 a.m. It is also a concerted effort to inculcate the above values in our students besides the following immediate objectives. Whatever contribution we receive from this walk will be for refurbishing the classrooms and to equip them with multi media projectors and other facilities, to make their studies at Aquinas more profitable and meaningful.
The members of the Aquinas Alumni Association including some of our Parliamentarians, Provincial Council Members, Aquinas Tutorial Staff together with the 5,000 strong student body clad in colourful costumes, will march to the drum beat of our school bands and musical groups in the Borella and Maradana areas.
The Aquinas Walk will commence from Aquinas College Grounds (990) Gnanartha Pradeepaya Mawatha (Maradana Road) and proceed towards Maradana up to Dean's Road Junction, then along Dean’s Road to Eye Hospital Junction - Ward Place - Borella Junction and along Maradana Road to Aquinas College.
We need your valuable assistance to make this a success. Your kind presence on this day will be very much appreciated.
Very Rev. Fr. Placidus De Silva RECTOR,
