On the Final Day of the Etisalat Open Squash Championships, held yesterday at the Gymkhana Club courts, Navin Samarsinghe and Sharaya Guruge emerged victorious in the Men’s and Women’s Open events respectively.

Navin, one of the country’s leading male squash players, calmly dispatched Binura Jayasuriya, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4 to win in straight sets. The match never seemed close and Binura had to fight bitterly for every point he won.
In the women’s Open event Sharya Guruge needed an extra set to overwhelm Damindi Udangawa. The final score was 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-3.
Binura also emerged second best in the Under 19 boys event, falling to Gihan Suwaris.
Sharya Guruge was also successful in the under 19 girls’ final, beating Nadindi Udangawa 11-9, 11-5, 12-10.
The Tournament started on March 28 and competitions were at different age levels ranging from Boys Under 9 right up to Men’s Over 50. |
