Feast of Divine Mercy

The Feast of Divine Mercy will be celebrated today at the Ragama Tewatte Basilica and the Maradana Fatima Church from 2 to 3 p.m. (the Chaplet and the Novena) and at 3 p.m. (the Enthronement of the image and Eucharistic celebration). The service at Tewatte will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Ajith Ruwan Perera OMI. and at Fatima Church by Rev. Fr. Gemunu Dias.

A workshop on nutritious diet

A workshop was conducted for students of Regent International College, Gampaha their teachers and parents at the college recently to introduce a nutritious diet programme for students. The speaker senior Dietician Ms. Sigrid de Silva, a member of the Association of Dietitians in Germany and consultant to many leading hospitals in Colombo made a detailed presentation on health and human growth issues related to wrong dietary habits of both children and adults, and the adverse long term effects of such habits.

Ms. de Silva presented a Nutritious Diet Plan for the school with recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner and foods in between the main meals. The seminar ended with a discussion.

The nutritious diet programme will be started for students of the college from next term with the school canteen also serving only nutritious food and drinks.

Thirteen-year-old A.D. Rajapaksa, a Grade 8 student of Hillwood College, Kandy is suffering from scoliosis, a severe disease of the spine.

Her orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. H.J. Samaraweera of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital has recommended that she undergo immediate surgery at the Apollo Hospital, Chennai.

The surgery will cost nearly Rs. 21 lakhs. As her parents are unable to meet this cost, they are appealing for donations from kind donors to help their daughter.

Sworn in as JP

Vijitha Kumara Edirisinghe of No. 61, Nawala Road, Nugegoda was recently sworn in as a Justice of the Peace (all island) in the presence of H.M.R. Anura Kumara, Magistrate and District Judge of Nugegoda.

The proprietor of Chatur Enterprises, Nugegoda, Mr. Edirisinghe is a successful businessman.

He is also a devotee of Sri Wijayawardhanaramaya and Sri Wickramasinharamaya of Nugegoda, Wimala Viharaya, Nawala and the Kethumatie Viharaya of Madiwela, Kotte. Presently, he serves as the Vice President of the Sri Wijayawardhanarama Dayaka Sabhava.

Since 1987, he has held the post of Senior Treasurer of the Community Development Foundation, Madiwela, Kotte. He has assisted in the construction projects of religious and social organizations, such as the Dhamma School building project of the Kethumatie Viharaya, Madiwela, Kotte.

An old boy of Nalanda College, Colombo 10, he is the youngest son of the late Herbert Edirisinghe who served in the Supreme Court and Hilda Edirisinghe.
