Fish in village wewa dying

By Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe

Residents in Thennathuriyawa in Anamaduwa say that a species of fish known as ma korali in the wewa are perishing while the water in it smells and is discoloured.

Residents here used to bathe in this wewa do not do so now as the fish known by the scientific name ‘Etroplus Maculatus’ have started to die in the water. The phenomenon has kept residents away from using the wewa for bathing.

Sashi Ekanayake, a resident when asked for his comments said that he saw lots of fish dead in the water on Friday morning when he came there for a bath. He said he returned sans bathing and informed the relevant authorities about the matter.

Nimal Karunaratne, president of the fishing association said that he had never seen the likes of what had happened.

MOH Damian de Silva, when contacted said that the fish are unique to the place adding that studies will be undertaken to see whether any poisonous matter had been introduced into the water. Samples of the water have been sent to the MRI in Colombo for examination.
