Being a dog lover myself, there is little I wouldn’t do for my dogs. They are faithful friends for life, so why not treat your belovedcompanions?
Krishanthi de Silva makes her own dog treats. “It was a friend, Priya Mendis who lives in Melbourne, who gave me the idea,” she says adding that the reason was because she couldn’t find nutritious snacks for her dogs.
Five dogs namely, Simba, Minka, Kiara, Meesha and Kemo inspired her to name her product Simka.
And seeing Kiara and Minka polish off their crunchy treats it is clear they really love what their ‘mum’ makes for them.
The treats come in three flavours, liver, chicken and vegetarian and are made with natural, dog-friendly ingredients which are of good quality with the base being wholewheat flour.
The liver treats are made with chicken liver, eggs and margarine while the vegetarian and chicken flavoured ones are made using parsley, cheese and carrot.
“I bake them on my own with my two helpers Seela and Roslyn and when we start measuring the ingredients Kiara and Minka come running to the kitchen and sit with their tongues hanging out,” laughs Krishanthi.
Cheese is not bad for dogs but some dogs however can be sensitive to dairy products while parsley acts as a natural breath freshener for them.
Vegetables and fruits have a number of health benefits for your dogs but there are a few that should not be given to them.
Dogs are omnivorous but some take a while to get used to the vegetarian treats. “Kiara and Minka though love their veggie treats!” Krishanthi says.
“These treats are ideal for training purposes,” she says and when trying to coax reluctant pets to take their medicines.
Simka Canine Treats are available at Odel, Ward Place and at the Bandaranaike International Airport in well packed tins. |
