Set between 1920s to 1972, the teledrama is a massive production with a large cast and extends to nearly 60 episodes. It was shot for nearly 130 days while the entire production took almost a year. The teledrama has a large cast with leading stars including Janak Premalal, Palitha Perera, Sathischandra Edirisinghe, Semini Iddamalgoda, Damitha Abeyratne, Chathurika Peries and Jagath Chamila.
The story of ‘Swayanjatha’ begins with Pabalina and Udenis, a childless couple who finally seek help of Ven. Yakkutigala, a monk well-known for his dark complexion and mysteries.
The villagers have made different stories about him and there are a number of rumors relating to the monk. The couple had to visit the monk regularly and when Udenis is unable to accompany, Pabalina goes to the temple with her best friend, Emlaliya. Though the villagers have various opinions about Ven. Yakkutigala, Pabalina is impressed about his qualities and way of thinking.
The treatment proves successful and Pabalina gets pregnant. This is delightful news not only for the couple who longed for a child but also to all their relatives. Publina is taken to her parental home for the delivery which is done by her own brother, a village doctor.
Pabalina gives birth to a boy and jubilant over the news in-laws come to visit the child. But the birth leads to divisions between Pabalina and Udenis and the two families as well. The child born to Pabalina and Udenis who are fair skinned is dark and rumours spread that the child is just like Ven. Yakkutigala who treated Pabalina.
Starting from this point, ‘Swayanjatha’ gives way to many a dramatic twist and turn. ‘What attracted me in this story was its novelty and the interesting plot’ said Sudath Rohana speaking about his latest directorial venture. Sudath is well-known for creating historical plays based on Sinhala literature; novels and short stories.
The periods set in ‘Swayanjatha’ and ‘Kaluwara Gedara’ are the same but stories are completely different.
‘With this novel theme and presentation we will be able to attract the teledrama audiences who are deserting TV due to trashy and substandard tele creations,’ Sudath said.
‘Swayanjatha’ also marks the first teledrama shot at ‘Ranminithenna’ tele village down south. |
