Vidyartha defeated traditional rivals Ananda by 26 points to 19 in their annual rugby encounter to regain the William Gopallawa trophy at the Police Park yesterday. Vidyartha led 13-7 at lemons.

Vidyartha accumulated their points through four tries and two penalties to the two goals and a try scored by Ananda. But overall Ananda lead the series with 22 wins as against Vidyartha’s 21.
Vidyartha who came into the game into the game as favourites were given a tough time by the Anandians who made their opponents to fight hard for their win. The try scorers for the winners were second row forward Jason Dissanayake who went over for two tries and one each coming from No 8 Kalana Warnakulasuriya and centre Dhanushka Talwatte while full back Nalin Kumara booted over the penalties.
For Ananda flanker Malith Sankalpa, prop forward Bhagya Nirmal and hooker Eric Balasuriya scored the tries with full back Lasith Madushan making the conversions. (MSA) |
