Phoenix Ogilvy wins first ever Gold for Lanka at Adfest Tokyo

Phoenix Ogilvy put Sri Lanka on the map by being the first ever advertising agency to bring home a Gold award at any international festival by winning Gold at Adfest Lotus Awards 2010 which was held in Tokyo, Japan. Seven Jury panels scrutinized almost 3,000 entries with only a small percentage of cutting-edge entries picking up metals this year, the local agency said.

Phoenix’s work for Iodex balm for one of its biggest clients GlaxoSmithKline won Gold in the Direct Lotus category which recognises creative excellence in Direct Marketing. Adfest is an international advertising event that rewards outstanding creative work and is a highly competitive show with creative giants in the ad world countries like Australia, China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, India and Singapore locking horns and vying for creative excellence every year.

Chairman of Phoenix Ogilvy Irvin Weerackody noted that this is another first for Sri Lanka. “Competing with the best in the world and winning is no mean feat. I am extremely delighted that our work is recognized at an international level with a Gold award, particularly when arbitrary action was taken by a local blue print committee to debar us from entering local awards,” he said in the statement.

The panel of judges in the Direct Lotus comprised the best creative brains in the world and was headed by Ravi Deshpande, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Contract Advertising Mumbai and included James Burchill (Executive Creative Director, SapientNitro, Australia), Jonghee Yoo (Creative Director, Cheil Worldwide, Seoul), Kyoko Someya (Creative Director, Hakuhodo Inc., Tokyo), Minoru Yashima (Senior Planning Director, ADK Inc., Tokyo), Nick Lim (Creative Consultant, McCann Worldgroup, Hong Kong), and Siew Tin Lee (Creative Director, OgilvyOne Worldwide, Malaysia).

This Gold Lotus comes hot on the heels after the agency’s stellar performance at Goafest Abby Awards 2010 where it won a Silver and Iodex balm won a bronze. The three international awards makes Phoenix Ogilvy the most awarded agency in the country this year and increases the agency's metal tally to over 20 regional and international awards ever since winning a Max Lewis Award in 1982. This also includes three Golds and three Silvers at the Abby Awards.
