A large number of oarsmen and women will take to the waters of the Bolgoda Lake when the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) hosts the 26th Sri Lanka National Rowing Championships, at the Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club from September 8-11.
Action from last year’s competition |
The championships will see several participants from a range of different schools and universities, as well as the three armed forces, zip across the lake in their boats. Some of the teams that will be expected to produce impressive results will be the rowers from S. Thomas’ College, Royal College, Ladies College, Bishop’s College, Musaeus College, the University of Colombo and the Moratuwa University, all of whom secured victories in a list of events at last year’s championships.
Competition at the tournament will be spread out over the Under 16, Under 19, Over 19 and Open Category age groups for men and women. This will only be the second time the championships are being held along the Bolgoda Lake, with the majority of all previous rowing tournaments, before the advent of the Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club in December 2008, being staged at the Beira Lake. This shift in venue augurs well for the progress of the sport because only the Bolgoda Lake offers competitors an international standard course distance of 2000 meters. |
