Police on alert for demos against 18th Amendment

Police will intensify security measures to ensure there are no violent incidents when Parliament debates the 18th Amendment on Tuesday. Police Chief Mahinda Balasuriya met his top officers at Police Headquarters yesterday to discuss how these measures will be carried out.

The Sunday Times understands that the Army will be tasked with providing security along roads leading to parliament to ensure the unhindered movement of MPs on Tuesday. These moves come in the wake of calls by sections of the opposition urging people to stage public protests and demonstrations to oppose the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The Parliament, which meets at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday, will have a one-day debate on the amendment. Voting is to take place at 5 p.m.
