UNP vows to expel members who support Constitutional amendments

By Damith Wickremasekera

The UNP will take disciplinary action against any member of the Party (UNP) who acts in violation of the decision of the Party’s executive committee to vote against the proposed amendments to the Constitution, General Secretary MP Tissa Attanayaka said.

“All who were present at the committee meeting raised their hands and agreed to oppose the constitutional changes, so they are bound to comply with the meeting decision,” he said.

Mr. Attanayaka said some the UNP MPs who were now saying they will support the Constitutional changes did not speak up at the committee meeting. “If they vote with the government on the 8th, the Party will take disciplinary action and they will be expelled from the Party,” he said.

Meanwhile, Badulla district MP Lakshman Seneviratne, one of the group of UNP members who has said they would support the Constitutional changes, observed that the UNP has not expelled a single member, even though many have defied executive committee decisions.

“The disciplinary committee has never expelled anyone, and will be unable to do so in the future as well,” he said.
