Monitor guardians of children, NCPA tells parents

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has launched several awareness programmes advising parents to pay attention to the people with whom their children spend their time and to their guardians at school, especially if the children are boarded in a hostel.

This action has been taken by the NCPA after it moved in to investigate allegations of a male nurse sexually abusing 14 children in a school in the Badulla District. The suspect, who was the male nurse of the school, was remanded for a two-week period on Thursday. He was not produced in courts after he had been admitted to the prison hospital.

The principal of the school told the Sunday Times that the school administration was informed of the matter by a school prefect and then an internal inquiry was held confirming that the suspect was guilty.
“We informed the NCPA and sacked the accused within 24 hours of being informed of the matter”, he added.

Consequently, the school is conducting a counselling programme for the students who were involved and an awareness programme for the whole student body regarding the prevention of such incidents and ways of protecting the students.

“The NCPA has informed that it too will conduct another awareness programme in the school,” he said. NCPA Chairperson Ms. Anoma Dissanayake said similar cases of child abuse have been reported in Dehiwala, Minuwangoda and in Anuradhapura areas as well.

Ms. Dissanayake added that many incidents of child abuse are reported from remote villages.
