Gihan Suwaris and K.A.M. Methsarani clinched a double at the Janashakthi Open Ranking Squash Tournament that concluded at the Gymkhana Club courts yesterday.
Suwaris won the men’s open and the boy’s under-19 events while Methsarani won the girls’ under 13 and 15 events.
Suwaris defeated his schoolmate from S. Thomas’ Eranga de Alwis in straight sets in the Open final, 11/5, 11/9, 11/7.
Suwaris was given a stiff challenge by de Alwis who was known to play good squash a few years earlier.
Suwaris defeated D.S. Gunawardena in the under-19 final also in straight sets, 22/6, 11/5, 11/5. Suwaris had to play these two finals on the same day but was given enough rest in between.
The women’s title went to elder sister Damindi Udangawa who was stretched to a five setter by Uadindi Udangawa in the final.
The girls’ under-19 title went to Naduni Gunawardane who beat Dulakshi Elikewela in a grueling five setter final. Elikewela is a national poolist and should do better in the future.
The boy’s under-17 title went to Hasintha Laksiri who defeated Udantha Hewage in straight sets.
The girl’s under-17 crown went to Dulakshi Elikewela who beat Naduni Gunawardane in a five setter final. This was sweet revenge on her defeat in the under-19 final. |
