The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has been a pioneer in offering British degrees in Sri Lanka with a proud history which dates back to 1990. Over the years more than 1800 graduates have passed out from IIT and are employed in prestigious positions in industry and academia.
The one year Foundation programme offered by IIT, is the best choice for students to attain preparation for a University of Westminster degree programme conducted by the Institute. It is a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum where subjects are specially packaged to enable students to pursue their specific career pathway in a discipline of computer science from the University of Westminster, UK.
With the primary aim of the course being to enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to progress to the next level of study within the BSc Honours degree programmes, IIT when designing the course, has given consideration to the potential academic strengths and weaknesses of students, as well as the specific academic requirements of the degree studies at the next level. Great importance has therefore been attached to the monitoring of students' progress and the provision of extra tutorial and specialist support where it is needed.
The Foundation Certificate has 8 modules and the programmes consist of 2 semesters. In each semester the students will study 4 modules. All these modules are worth 15 credits each and the modules are common to all five degree programmes which include the (BSc (Hons) Computing, BSc (Hons) Internet Computing, BSc (Hons) Information Systems, BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management and the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering). The programme consists of 120 credits and successful students will receive a certificate from IIT and a transcript of studies.
A student completing the Foundation course at IIT will be able to apply the core mathematical techniques which are the tools of all scientific disciplines, as well as those specific to computing, have developed basic programming skills in computing and communications and have an adequate knowledge of electronics & telecommunications to understand IT fully and to apply it effectively in commercial applications. They will also have a broad knowledge of computer hardware and computer systems software, be able to use word-processing and other commercial applications packages, acquire an acceptable level of analytical and presentation skills and have experience in designing websites on the Internet.
This is also a full-time intensive programme for students who fall short of the A/L requirements to enter the University of Westminster degree programmes. However, they should possess the O/L qualification which includes a credit pass in English and Mathematics.
The lecture panel at IIT comprises industry experienced lecturers who employ a diverse range of teaching strategies including case studies, video presentations and project work.
These teaching methods are intended to develop students' knowledge, skills and ability to identify and solve real world problems. Continuous assessments are carried out throughout the study programmes to enhance student involvement and skills development.
IIT also has an excellent campus environment, with a state-of-the-art library and well equipped laboratories. IIT's computing faculties are linked to the intranet of the University of Westminster, enabling students to access the digital library, lecture material and past papers.
