Eighteen international audience graced the annual Transfer and Graduation Ceremony of the American College of Higher Education making it a grandiose and colourful function on November 6 at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo. The theme of the ceremony was a pragmatic stance "We Educate. You Make the World a Better Place".
This 2010 convocation was a milestone in the history of the College since it was the first convocation following its new elevation and designation as the International Centre of Broward College, USA, on the approval of the Commission on Colleges and Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), one of the six accrediting bodies in USA.
The Chief Guest, Dr. David Moore, Vice-President for International Programs, Broward College, the Guest of Honour, Prof. Patrick Smith, International Advisor for Sri Lanka, Broward College, the Presidents, Vice-Presidents and senior officials of American education institutions in Finland, Singapore, India, Vietnam and the academic staff, were escorted to the graduation venue in a colourful procession by Mrs. Sherryn Yaseen, the CEO and Mr. Suresh Yaseen, the Director Operations. Following the lighting of the oil lamp, and the national anthem and college anthem, the graduation ceremony was declared open by the Academic Dean, Prof. Sarath Amarasinghe.
In her welcome address the CEO, Ms. Yaseen reflecting on the graduation theme pointed out that the American College of Higher Education, Sri Lanka and Broward College, USA together had educated the Sri Lankan students and had provided over 1300 with higher education opportunities in USA, Canada, UK, Australia etc. to reach their academic goals so that armed with education their students would Make the World a Better Place. She also added that the American college was proud to be associated with Broward College, which is the 6th largest college in USA catering to over 80,000 students on 4 campuses and having international programmes in 12 different countries.
She further added, "As you become more and more educated, your mind will open up to the world and see all the good as well as the injustice on the earth. This assertion "YOU Make the World a Better Place" has encouraged you and will continue to motivate you to do something that truly does make a difference for yourself, for us and for others".
Prof. Sarath Amarasinghe, the Academic Dean, addressing the audience pointed out that globalization is an important progression of the 21st century in which education holds a very central position. Students who choose to read for an American degree education have almost unlimited study options and are highly sought after by employers worldwide.
The Graduation and Transfer ceremony 2010 conferred transfer certificates, Bachelor's and Associate degrees for outgoing students from the 5 branch campuses of the American College in Kandy, Galle, Matara, Kurunegala, and Negombo, who successfully fulfilled the academic requirements for each programme. Students who made distinctive performance in studies and placed on the President's List, Dean's List and Top of the Class were also awarded certificates at this ceremony.
The participation of distinguished international delegates, distinguished invitees, parents and well wishers of the graduating students was instrumental in making this event a glamorous one. They were also highly impressed by the items performed at the ceremony by the students of the American College of Higher Education and the American International School.
Mrs. Anna Mathew Thomas represented the academic staff to address the gathering and Ms. Shamilka Amunugama, delivered a speech on behalf of the graduating and transferring students, while Mr. Arjuna Mahadeva a graduating student proposed the vote of thanks. The ceremony concluded with the Graduation Dinner and the Graduation Ball.
