The main opposition United National Party's mass protest rally in Colombo on January 26 has been called off.
This is both in the wake of the upcoming local government elections as well as the floods that have affected more than a million people in three provinces.
UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier vowed to bring in more than a million people to take part in the protest rally. The protestors were to demand the release of former General Sarath Fonseka and voice their anger over mounting food prices.
The UNP has now decided that a major rally in Colombo will be held on Feb. 9 to coincide with the first anniversary of the former Army Commander turned Presidential candidate's arrest on the night of Feb. 8, 2010. |
