The sale of food in unhygienic conditions outside schools and public places in Colombo City has increased.
The sale of food items and a range of fruits and achcharu outside such places are a common scene, especially after schools close for the day.
With little or no protection for the food items from dust, children are vulnerable to contract diseases by consuming such food.
According to Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Public Health Inspectors have to ensure that these items are sold under hygienic conditions. He said that steps were being taken to keep a close watch on the vendors.
However, in most cases the small time vendors outside schools and public places go undetected.
These pictures taken in Colombo City, show how food items are sold in the open outside schools.
