Worker questioned regarding illicit cremations

A worker attached to the crematorium in Kundasale has been questioned by police regarding the cremation of a corpse without obtaining the permission of the Pradeshiya Sabha. It transpired the said worker had performed five other cremations as well without permission. He admitted to having charged the official fee of Rs. 5,000 per cremation, but not handed the cash over to the authorities.

Though no official complaint has been lodged, police initiated an inquiry into the incident. It is reported this individual had cremated several bodies at crematoriums in Kengalla and Werapitiya as well.
