A group of young men – representing three leading Colombo boys’ schools – teamed up recently in a community service project at a home for elderly women.
Royal, Mahanama and Thurstan College students joined hands to clean and colour-wash the Webada Elderly Ladies’ Home, tend the garden, and paint furniture.
The elderly persons were also given free eye tests and free spectacles. The tests were conducted by Dr. Mrs. Muditha Kulatunge, and the spectacles were presented by Vision Care Opticians.
The programme ended with a lunch for the elderly women and a concert of song and dance.
This was also a happy occasion for the three schools to get together and mend fences. Of late, relations between the three schools had been tense as a result of inter-school rivalries and sports-related disputes.
The schools’ Prefects’ Councils shared the costs of the project. The Webada Elderly Ladies’ Home is managed by the YMBA Kiribathgoda. |
