Kangan Institute's Aviation Industry Training Centre (AITC) increased its capacity to deliver world-class training earlier this year when it entered into a new agreement with industry partner Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT).

The agreement will see the AITC - based in Melbourne, Victoria - deliver European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) category B1 and B2 training using Lufthansa Technical Training's industry training resources and examinations. As a leading government TAFE provider of aircraft maintenance qualifications in Victoria, Kangan Institute continues to build on its reputation as the training partner of choice for national and international organisations.
AITC manager Mike Heffey says the training agreement is a great new direction for a partnership which was established more than two years ago. "We initially established our partnership with Lufthansa in 2008, which coincided with our purchase of a Boeing 737 and our specialist CASA accreditation," he says. "Since then, we have continued to build on the partnership which allows us to access world-class aircraft type and specialist aviation compliance training."
The new agreement will provide Kangan Institute students access to world-class training resources, particularly the advanced training required for licensed engineers working on different types of aircraft. "To develop these resources we require access to the latest aircraft and maintenance data and TAFE in general isn't able to achieve this without assistance from the industry," Mike says. "Lufthansa is an airline that is well known for its safety record and quality of workmanship so it makes sense for us to partner with such a well-known global airline.
"Up until recently we were providing our international students with an Australian recognised qualification aligned with the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authorities aircraft maintenance licence system. Now we're able to offer globally-recognised outcomes that don't limit the graduates' employment opportunities just to Australia but actually increases their chances to find employment in many countries around the world."
LTT CEO Christopher Meyerrose says the partnership will see both organisations share training knowledge, expertise and products to better support the local, domestic and international aviation sectors. "Lufthansa Technical Training is extremely pleased to be strengthening the partnership with Kangan Institute. This new development is a fine example of how the two organisations are working together to add new outcomes and services to the aviation market," he says.
As a world-renowned aviation brand, students completing the LTT training will graduate with improved employment prospects. An added benefit of the training is the potential for students to move into a pathway to university study following their training with Kangan Institute. Enrolments for the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering are accepted from international students in February and July each year. The qualification takes two years full-time study to complete.
