Aid to north: Basil briefs top envoys

Five Sri Lankan envoys were briefed on Friday by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on how humanitarian needs of the civilians in the north were met by the government before and after the separatist war.

The envoys are Prasad Kariyawasam (New Delhi), Dayan Jayatilleke (Paris), Kshenuka Seneviratne (UN – Geneva), Palitha Kohona (UN – New York) and Ravinatha Ariyasinha (Brussels). The idea is to have these envoys brief the governments in the capitals where they are based.

Mr. Rajapaksa told them that a comprehensive report on how the government handled humanitarian relief efforts was now being prepared. The Ministry of Defence is also formulating its own account of the type of weapons used during the final stages of the war against Tiger guerrillas, civilian casualties, responses to claims of disappearances and answer to other legal issues. These measures come in the wake of the UN Panel’s report on alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.
