From Russia, seeking enlightenment

By Shelton Hettiarachchi

The 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi will dawn in 17 days time. 2600 years ago, at Buddhagaya, Siddhartha Gauthama attained Buddhahood. Since then, the Sangha has become a part of our society. Just as the enlightened one became aware of the truth then, even today, the Sangha follows in his footsteps.

The Bikkhus follow in their master’s path, some coming to Sri Lanka from far off lands, such as Ivan from Russia, who is today a monk, assuming the title of Ven. Rusiyawe Sugatha Thera. He spends his time in the forest, in the cool climes of this country, meditating and seeking alms. He has, as his companion, a dog, which makes them an interesting couple.
