LA Bills set to be passed in parliament

Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said two Local Authorities Bills, one of which seeks to change the system of electing members to these bodies, are set to be passed in parliament on Wednesday.

He added the bills –with a few amendments-- would be taken up on that day. The two bills, namely, the Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Bill and the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill were held up at the Committee stage early last month as opposition parties wanted more discussions before they were passed.

Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga said Government had agreed to hold a final discussion on the bills on Tuesday before they were passed on Wednesday.
