‘Dancefest 2011’ , a popular Latin, Ballroom and Salsa competition produced by Footwork Events will come alive at the Galle Face Hotel Colombo on Sunday 22 May.
The motivation behind organizing this competition stems from the success of the original Dancefest competitions held in 2009 in Kandy and Colombo. The competitions are open to competitors from local dance schools and different categories are available for competitors of varying skill levels.
Five qualified professional adjudicators will be invited to adjudicate at the dance competitions. The judges will be from Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
One of the highlights of the competition will be a ten-dance Ballroom and Latin American show performed by Malaysian Dance Champions, Bernard Lim and Natalie Tan. It is after a very long time Sri Lankan Audiences will get an opportunity to witness a ten dance show.
As mentioned earlier, the competition will feature three categories; Ballroom, Latin and Salsa. The Ballroom and Latin categories will comprise of the following events; Beginners, Pre Novices, Juveniles under 12, Juniors under 16, Seniors over 45, Novices, Pre Amateur and Amateur. The Salsa section will comprise of the Novices and Open events.
It was decided to breakdown the Juniors to two events in order to ensure a fair competition to the younger dancers. At the recently concluded 4th Footwork International Championships, there was an overwhelming number of entries in the Junior category. Since there are more teachers catering to a younger age group of 5-12 and over 20 junior couples are expected to take part at Dancefest. This is bound to be one of the many highlights of the competition as the Junior event is always an enjoyable one.
The addition of Salsa events to the competition was based on the current popularity of the dance both locally and internationally. The most interesting part of a salsa competition is that the dancers create their own routine. Also the variation from the standard dance forms and the change of pace makes the salsa events a colourful addition to the competition. Already more than 35 salsa dancers have entered the competition.
The inaugural Dancefest Competitions, held in 2009, was a tremendous success. This year the organizers are hope to improve on our previous efforts by offering a keener competition with more categories. Competition participants will be from local dance schools and there is an expected number of over 150 competitors.
