‘Thaal’ an evening of classical music with original compositions and popular songs will be performed by veteran music director Sarath Wickrama at 6.30 pm on May 11 at the Lumbini Theatre, Colombo.
A group of renowned Asian musicians and vocalists are to join Sarath Wickrema who celebrates 38 years on his musical journey. The Sinahala, Tamil and Hindi melodies will be played in a symphony by experienced musicians together with Sarath Wickrema who holds his maiden musical concert.
On this occasion a compact disc (CD) of ‘Thaal’ and four books on music are to be released at the musical evening. Having entered the musical scene in 1973, Sarath joined the musical band of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). In his journey through music Sarath has directed music for nearly 30 films, 100 cassettes and 150 teledramas. A number of songs he composed for cinema and sung by singers like Nanda Malani, Neela Wickremasinghe, Pradeepa Dharmadasa and Sarath himself have won awards while he also won the Best Music Director award at Rigam, Sumathi and OCIC awards festivals for his music direction for the teledrama ‘Arungal’.
Having composed music for nearly 2000 songs, ‘Thaal’ a CD comprising his musical compositions includes eastern folk melodies played by the symphony orchestra. Recording of the CD was done both in India and Sri Lanka and the ‘Thaal’ concert for the first time is presented with dts surround technology.
