Humidity will prevail during monsoon season- Met Dept

Though the prevailing South-West monsoon is expected to bring strong winds and heavy showers, it can also create a humid atmosphere on windless days and nights from June to September. According to Duty Meteorologist- Meteorology Department, Gayana Hendawitharana, people may feel the humidity and discomfort when there is no wind or rain.

She explained that, during this monsoon season, when the warm moist air sweeps across the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, the humidity that develops causes a burning sensation and discomfort.
“Humidity can develop at any time of the day. It is important to take a lot of fluids, especially water to counter its effects,” she said.

The South-West monsoon brings heavy rain to the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and to the Galle, Matara Districts. “The eastern parts of the country are presently experiencing warm temperatures, with Batticaloa reporting 37 Celsius and Trincomalee reporting 34 Celsius. The average in south-western parts are around 30 Celsius. Colombo’s current temperature is around 31 Celsius.
“Though there is no major increase in temperature in the south-west region, the humidity is felt because the atmosphere is moisture laden,” she said.
