Three elephants were killed when they were run over by a train, on the Northern Line at Kasikote between Ambanpola and Galgamuwa stations at around midnight on Friday.
The train was heading to Anuradhapura at the time of the accident. The area is known for such accidents, as wild elephants roam after dusk and enter villages in search of food.
According to railway authorities, there had been no damage to the track and trains ran to schedule in spite of the accident.
