UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya will make a second attempt to introduce the Right to Information Bill in Parliament on Tuesday.
An attempt to move the Bill last September was thwarted, after the Government asked him to withdraw it with an assurance that a similar Bill would be introduced by them shortly.
However, as no such Bill has been presented by the Government, Mr. Jayasuirya’s private member’s Bill has been re-listed in the Order Paper of Parliament for Tuesday, on a request made by him to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.
The Bill seeks to provide for freedom of access to official information and the establishment of a Freedom of Information Commission.
The Bill also specifies the grounds on which access can be denied and sets out the procedure for making request for information. |
