The Ceylon Federation of Labour (CFL) this week expressed its solidarity with the Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) over their wage demands, and urged the Government to solve the issue.
The trade union said it has followed with dismay the protracted impasse in the dispute between the FUTA and the government despite the reasonable stance adopted by the former to resolve the issue.
“In the light of steady erosion of real wages felt by the salaried generally in the country FUTA’s trade union action in demanding negotiations on what they claim a salary increase the government has agreed they deserve is reasonable. FUTA has pointed out that the 11.25% budgetary increase granted to academic staff which included the 5% salary increase given to all government employees has been rendered meaningless after deduction of more than Rs. 1,000 as taxes introduced by the 2010 budget,” the CFL statement said. |
