Che bello! Truly Italian

By Yashasvi Kannangara

“Walk in as guests and leave as a family,” is the motto 82, Barnes Place stands by. The plush Italian restaurant in the heart of buzzing Colombo 7 comprising 72 seating spaces is open from 11 in the morning to midnight.

The dining experience not only includes good food and service but also feeling quite at home with anyone being welcome in the kitchen, to observe or get involved in the cooking process. Guests freely chat with the staff and are even invited to make their own pizza.

Italian cooking is all about family and the inviting kitchen uses slow cooking methods. The chef and his team at No. 82 have lived in Italy and are experts in satisfying the Mediterranean palate while many ingredients including olive oil, basil, anchovies and Parmesan are from Italy, with all ingredients having ISO certification.

The cuisine at No. 82 varies and is Halal. Raffaella Giovanni’s menu does not forget the vegetarian dishes and each category has one or more vegetarian plates. However, the signature dish is Peppino’s pizza baked in the fire-brick oven. With a choice of thin crust, folded or simply delicious along with myriad toppings to choose from, the pizza can be consumed alone or with one of an array of summer salads along with a range of red and white wines.

Another speciality is home-made or restaurant-made in this case, pasta including ravioli, fettuccini and lasagna. Fusili, penne, tagliatelle and other varieties are also available on the menu and guests have the opportunity of selecting the accompanying sauces such as Arrabatta, Al Pesto and Alla Marinara.
The coffee served here is prepared with an original Italian blend known as Lavazza, and is popular among the locals. Cappuccino and Espresso are ordered mostly by the clientele.

The dessert menu, meanwhile, carries traditional favourites like Tiramisu, La Cassata and Pannacotta.
Dishes like the Seafood Risotto, the Ricotta Cheese and Spinach Ravioli, the Tiramisu, the Foccacia bread, freshly baked infused with the scent of herbs and olive oil and a salad of olives, smoked salmon, pepper and basil have been the most popular so far.

The space is divided into specific sections -- the reception, the Peppino pizza room, the Four Seasons lounge, the main dining area, the Barcode coffee and beverage bar, the kitchen and the Sophia Loren private dining area. The interior has many feature walls adorned with textured designs and paint techniques. The amalgamation of vibrant reds and deep gold in the Sophia Loren room and the different hues of the Four Seasons lounge set the mood for a cosy evening. Exposed brick walls, bamboo sun tats, terracotta floors, built-in seats, Tuscan walls, wrought iron candelabras and light shades of bright Mediterranean colours create a familiar sense of Italy. The vinyl floral motifs on exposed glass and the glass blocks letting in streaks of sunlight add the final feel of light and comfort make dining an experience at No. 82.

The restaurant plans to expand with an open-to-sky garden dining area, more private dining rooms on the upper floor, a karaoke music lounge, a gallery space, a spa and a boutique store. High tea and theme nights are also on the list of upcoming attractions.
