Deshapriya dazzles at Beliatta

In the opening match of the fourth annual Dilmah Challenge Trophy cricket tournament for the visually handicapped, played at D. A. Rajapakse Stadium in Beliatta recently, Subhagya SC, Monaragala scored an easy 109-run win over Senehasa SC, Beliatta.

Batting first Subhagya SC rattled up a massive 356 all out in 38.3 overs with skipper and Sri Lanka star Chandana Deshapriya dazzling with 147 with 21 elegant boundaries sprayed all around the ground. Together with Sunil Weerasinghe (62 with 3 boundaries) Deshapriya put on a huge 213 for the fifth wicket. Suranga Sampath also chipped in with a fine 58 runs with eight boundaries, Upul Chaminda claimed 3 for 43. In reply Senehasa could only reach 247 for 9 wickets in their allotted 40 overs. Nalinda (56, two fours), Upul Sanjeewa (49, seven fours) and Damith (33) chipped in for Senehasa.

In the second match of the tournament played on July 10 at the same venue, reigning champions, Ranaviru Sevana scored a convincing 81-run win over Senehasa SC. Taking the first lease of the wicket, the Soldiers notched up 313 for 6 wickets in their 40 overs. Skipper Ruwan Karunatilleke made 67 with two boundaries whilst Ekanayake (55, three boundaries) and Ravindra (52, two boundaries) made full useful contributions with Samantha (62 n.o. 7 fours) also impressing. Damith Thushara captured two wickets.

Despite a century opening stand between skipper Samantha Rajapakse (35, 6 boundaries) and Sulochana Gunawardena (97 n.o., 6 fours) Senehasa SC were restricted to 231 for 6 wickets in their allotted 40 overs. Chinthaka (35) also batted well. Skipper capped a fine double with two wickets for 23.
