Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday announced that a new online visa scheme for foreign travellers would come into force on January 2012. Here Immigration and Emigration Department Controller General Chulananda Perera briefs the media. The ‘Electronic Travel Authorization – ETA’ will enable travellers to get online visa approval within 24 hours of submitting an application for short term stays. A ‘processing’ fee of $50 for all travellers will be charged for online applications for a 30-day short-stay visit while there is no visa fee. Those seeking a visa on arrival must pay extra - $75. The fee varies for extended stays. All transit passengers will require a visa at a ‘processing’ fee of $25, a new rule against earlier when passengers transiting through Colombo did not require a visa nor were charged.
