The importance of maintaining the work/life balance cannot be emphasized enough at any given moment. We tend to slip too easily when it comes to identifying and handling our priorities. In certain instanced we are forced to give priority to our work and forget that we have a life outside our work place. Likewise, sometimes we bring in the household problems to the office without thinking that at work, complete professionalism is expected from us. We, being human, cannot shut ourselves completely from each side. Therefore we need to find equilibrium in order to be more productive at our lives.
Coaching Psychology can be described as our gateway for a balanced life. It is a process which helps an individual to improve their performance in both personal and professional life by being coached in certain psychological theories. Though this is quite a new subject area in Sri Lanka, countries like USA, UK and Australia have professionally qualified psychologists practicing Coaching Psychology.
We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Dasha Grajfoner Ph.D. in Psychology and discuss the merits of practicing Coaching Psychology. Dr. Grajfoner came to Sri Lanka as a lecturer to Oxford College of Business in order to conduct the module on Coaching Psychology to the students who were following their M.Sc. in Business Psychology.
Dr. Grajfoner, who is representing Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, said that Coaching Psychology mainly dealt with the stressful conditions such as dealing with change, managing people, communicating effectively etc which we mostly come across in our work life. Especially as one advances in his/her career, with the level of responsibilities, the level of stress would also become high.
This is also applicable if one is changing the job, moving to a different office or a different designation etc. With Coaching Psychology, a person learns to deal with change, understand the subordinates better and communicate well. Therefore this can be called as executive Coaching as well.
As Coaching Psychology is a very new area of Psychology, Dr. Grajfoner emphasized on the important of the students getting their information on teachers who have practical on hand experience of the subject.
Dr. Grajfoner is an accredited Coaching psychologist who has experience in business coaching and personal coaching. She said that Coaching physiology needs in depth analysis on the individual's life and some of the issues that can be handled with this therapy would be anger management, stress, organizational changes and body language coaching etc. Coaching Psychology is useful for both professional and personal life. It can help anyone who goes through any changes in life who want to get their life back in balance.
It uses preventative methods which would help to prevent re-occurrences of depression, stress etc.
When inquired on Sri Lankan students' level of response to this new subject area, Dr. Grajfoner enthusiastically mentioned that at Oxford College of Business, she has met a very bright batch of students and that she is counting on them to study this subject thoroughly and deliver it to the rest of the country as this is a very effective subject which can help to speed up the Sri Lankans to recover from their post Tsunami and post war effects and move on towards healing.
