Minister setting up parks for young couples

By Damith Wickremasekara

Sri Lanka’s first park for young couples will be opened in Matara next month, Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

He said a six acre beach front land had been selected for the project estimated to cost Rs. 50 million.
“The objective of this park is to provide a place for couples to meet freely as they now face problems meeting in public places and even are arrested by the police,” he said. The minister said there might be objections from various groups, but he would go ahead because at present, the couples were facing various problems without a public place to meet.

The minister said the park would entertain only persons between the age groups of 16-30 years and security officers at the gate would check the identity cards of couples entering the park.

The minister, however, said security officers would be deployed inside the parks to ensure that the couples did not misbehave. The park would comprise a 114-seat mini-theater, an art gallery where youth could display their art skills, a reference library, an open air theatre, a wi-fi-zone, a food outlet and a beach front area with benches.

The park would be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 10.p.m.
Mr. Alahapperuma said a similar park would be set up in the Colombo district and a UDA land near the parliament building had been selected. More such parks would be set up in Gampaha, Anuradhapura and Kurunegala.
