A book opened and read is worth more than sitting pretty on your shelf
A campaign to provide new or reusable useful books to deserving and needy students from rural and urban areas will be launched on 20th January 2012 coinciding with EDEX Expo 2012.
Chairman Kamal Abeysinghe stated ‘we received a number of requests from school communities all over the island for library books, through the ‘Live your dream’ programme that we launched a few months ago. These requests reveal that there is a huge need among both rural and urban students to gain access to useful educational books to meet their educational and reading needs.
‘If these students who yearn for library books could be provided with some new or reusable books it could be yet another worthy project.
Since a large number of youth who are after their O/L or A/L exams visit EDEX Expo in Colombo and Kandy, we decided to request them to donate books that they will not need any more to this worthy cause. It also gives our youth and the public an opportunity to demonstrate their civic consciousness without an additional cost whilst making good use of idling resources.
A number of Principals and students from many schools in Colombo and Kandy have already pledged their support to this project’ Abeysinghe stated.
This project also enhances EDEX’s long term vision of educating and promoting sustainable living among our youth as ‘reuse of books’ reduces use of paper, saves trees and the planet..
There will be special counters at the EDEX Expo 2012 at BMICH Colombo from 20 to 22 January and at KCC Kandy on 27 and 28 January 2012 to receive new or reusable books or magazines with current content etc from any interested donor.
Donate your idling books and help create a community of educated and well-read youth among the needy!
