The 30th Annual Architects 2012 began this week and ends today (Sunday) at the BMICH scheduled. It was inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. SLIA while attributing the 30 year conflict, as usually as most others in Sri Lanka do to cover up their failure, are adding a new facet to their weakness - the 450 years of foreign domination of Sri Lanka, it transpired at a media briefing by the organizers of the event, the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA).
It appears that SLIA awaits the completion of infrastructure to expand and promote their activities fully. One media person in fact suggested that the theme of SLIA 'Regenerating Sri Lanka, the Architect and the Build Environment" should be changed to "Regenerating Colombo ...", as other cities in the country are in chaotic conditions. On the sidelines of the launch, the Business Times asked Ranjan Nadesapillai, President, SLIA, whether there is any way of quantifying or measuring the savings with regard to sustainability and saving of natural resources like water, electricity and replacing the trees that would be cut down for construction.
When the paper indicated that in certain developed countries, adhering to some sustainability issues are mandatory like if erosion takes place as a result of construction, necessary amends have to be made to supplement the shortfall and in fact in the US a Sri Lankan domiciled in that country is the sole supplier of natural material to supplement the shortfall, he said that there are no mandatory rules imposed by SLIA for their members to have any assessment on the saving of these resources Mr Nadesapillai said that some of the schools that were destroyed by the tsunami, when they were replaced, have been constructed in such a way that would reduce using electricity lighting.
The four day sessions of the Architect 2012 includes the participation of distinguished dignitaries from Sri Lanka and well-known foreign architects. The National Conference that will be held along the Architect 2012 will be addressed by Prof Jan Gehl from Denmark, Prof Frans van der Werf from the Netherlands and Prof Nalini Thakur from India.
SLIA indicated that 'Architect 2012' provides a great opportunity for the general public to understand the extent of the construction industry in the country and other information of construction industry that are useful to life. School children in groups are free to visit Architect 2012.
