Sivali Central Ratnapura regains title after six years

40th L.V. Jayaweera Boxing Championship

Sivali Central Ratnapura regained the coveted L.V. Jayaweera boxing title after a lapse of six years when they emerged champions at the 40th L.V. Jayaweera Boxing Championships held at the Medankara MV boxing ring in Horana.

Sivali Central finished on top by securing 29 points with Sri Sumangala Panadura taking the second slot with 23 points while St. Sylvester’s and Bandaranayake MMV Gampaha ended joint second runners up with 19 points each.

Sivali Central apart from emerging champions had the honour of producing the best boxer in I.H.S.K. Dayananda while D.M. Hamsa of Jamil Ul Azar Udathalawinna was adjudged the best loser.
The champion who has won the L.V. Jayaweera Shield on six occasions since they first won the title in 1996 last won the championship in 2006 and in between this period produced the best boxer on four occassions.

The championship which was held over four days saw 180 young pugilists from 38 schools around the island in action. A notable absentee was last year’s champion Vidyarthana Pirivena University Horana.

Bantamweight (48-50) A.C Herath (Mayurapada NS Mawanella) beat A.K Nuwanthika (Sri Sumanagala Panadura). Featherweight (50-52) Y.G.M.P Anurudda (Peradeniya Junior School) beat T.S Dissanayaka(Vidyartha). Lightweight (52-54) M.A Pathirana beat C.K Madushan (Bandaranayake MV Veyangoda). Light Welterweight (60-64) G.T.C. Guruge (St. Aloysius Ratnapura) beat D.I. Anuruddha (St John’s Nugegoda).
