Maduka steers Moors to victory

Moors right arm spinner Maduka Liyanapathirana steered his side to start the Under 23 Division One cricket tournament on a winning note with a match bag of eight wickets thus helping them to record a nine wicket win over BRC with a day to spare at Braybrooke Place.Maduka who took five wickets in BRC’s second innings following his three scalps earlier was supported by left arm spinner Chamikara Edirisinghe who grabbed four wickets.

Moors continued their domination when play resumed in the morning yesterday. The first day saw them bundling out BRC for a lowly 92 and then making a reply of 215, thanks to half tons from Chalitha Helambage and Shehan Jayasuriya.

Later BRC, batting the second time, resuming from their overnight score of 7 for 1 were bowled out for 176 which left Moors a simple target of 53 runs for victory which they achieved with ease. Air Force openers T. Nadeera and Wishwa Kanchuka’s opening stand of 123 runs laid the foundation for the side to make the identical score of 330 which NCC made at Rifle Green.

Air Force resuming from their overnight score of 89 for no loss saw the openers adding a further 34 runs before being separated with the dismissal of Kanchuka who made 51 which included six boundaries and two sixes.

Nadeera went on to make 97 which had ten boundaries and a six while Angelo Emmanuel and Rosco Thattil chipped in with knocks of 45 and 41 respectively which helped them boost the score.
The opening day’s play saw NCC taking first lease of the wicket make a formidable 330 which came on the back of useful scores from Lahiru Udara (90) and Irosh Samarasooriya (72).

At P. Sara Stadium the left and right arm spin combination of Navin Kavikara and Dushan Vimukthi helped CCC to take a first inning lead over Tamil Union. The pair shared eight wickets between them to restrict the home team, resuming from their overnight score of 99 for 2, to a score of 220. This was in reply to CCC’s 261. Tamil Union set a target of 194 runs ended the day on seven for no loss.Chilaw Marians too have already obtained a first inning lead over Moratuwa SC at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa. Moratuwa SC in reply to Chilaw Marians score of 197 resuming from their overnight score of 113 for 7, made 128.

Chilaw Marians batting the second time made 178 while Moratuwa SC chasing a target of 248 was 68 for 2 needing another 180 runs when play gets underway today. Leo CC from a precarious position of 87 for 7 at lunch recovered to make 145 but was unable to prevent Colts from taking a first inning lead at the Colts ground.

Bloomfield and Ragama CC featured in a tie with the two teams making the identical score of 117 at Reid Avenue. Bloomfield batting the second time made 140 which left Ragama CC a target of 141 runs for victory.
