Nations Trust Bank has implemented the Schools Empowerment Programme to identify and establish long-term relationships with under-privileged schools operating in rural areas. With the commitment to uplift the community through various sustainability initiatives, delivering quality education remains as an integral part of the bank’s CSR initiatives.
Every year, Nations Trust Bank provides a full year’s worth of school supplies, teaching aids and essentials across four schools – Nithalawa School in Galgamuwa, Amunuthenna School in Ratnapura, Mullivaikkal Government Tamil Medium School in Mullaitivu and Wahalkada D-5 School in Kebithigollewa. This year, the official handing over of the donations, benefitting and empowering over 570 students, was carried out as small-scale events organised by the respective schools due to the pandemic, the bank said in a media release.
Theja Silva, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Nations Trust Bank said, “As we all know, the past year has adversely affected the socioeconomic conditions across the country, and it could not have been a favourable time period for the students in these schools, who mostly come from families with livelihoods depending on farming and craftsmanship. At Nations Trust Bank, we understand that having access to quality education is essential for the development of this country and therefore, it is a truly rewarding experience to be able to support these students with their education and contribute towards empowering our future generation.”
The Schools Empowerment Programme, which kick-started 10 years ago, has been able to impact the lives of many students and yield tangible results such as increased pass rates for GCE Ordinary Level exams. Over the years, in addition to the donation of school supplies, the bank has been able to successfully build fully equipped IT and science laboratories and facilitate items suited to meet the schools’ requirements
