Stages Theatre Group Stands in Solidarity with Palestine

Business

The Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine marks the United Nations Day for Solidarity with Palestine with a public event on November 29, 2024, at the Lighthouse Auditorium of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. As a part of this poignant observance, Stages Theatre Group will present their production, ‘Patterns of Our Genocides’, directed by Ruwanthie de Chickera.

First created for the World Conference on Statelessness in Kuala Lumpur and performed at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival in Kigali and lately at the Festival of Ideas in Colombo, ‘Patterns of Our Genocides’ has been appreciated by audiences for its timely call for justice. The production is a powerful letter written by a young Rohingya refugee to a friend trapped in Gaza, exposing chilling parallels of genocide and systematic violence faced by Palestinians and Rohingyas, and the structures carefully put in place leading to such atrocities like genocides.

With a runtime of 23 minutes, the play deals with genocide, apartheid, structural corruption, and the enduring scars of violence. It has been recognised for its ability to spark deep conversations and inspire collective action against injustice.

“At its heart, Patterns of Our Genocides is an urgent reminder of the humanity we share and the atrocities we must not ignore,” says Director Ruwanthie de Chickera. “It is our honour to perform this piece at an event dedicated to standing with Palestine. We hope this work moves audiences to reflect, empathise, and act.”

As Stages Theatre Group stands in solidarity with Palestine, we remain committed to using the arts as a platform to amplify voices silenced by oppression. This performance is a tribute to those who have endured immense suffering and a plea for peace, justice, and humanity.
