Colombo equities on Thursday closed in red on the back of much uncertainty surrounding the political environment, analysts said. The Benchmark Index shed 22.50 points or 0.32 per cent to close at 7031.33 while S&P SL 20 index lost 14.34 points (0.37 per cent) to end at 3,913.06. Today’s losses were mainly driven by price declined in primary blue chip counters such as Nestle Lanka which saw a price loss of 2.40 per cent to close at Rs 2098.40 along with other price losses in counters such as Lion Brewery and JKH, analysts said. They added that Banking, Finance and Insurance Sector Diversified Holdings Sector managed to record the highest turnover of Rs. 260 million for the day, followed by the Diversified Holdings Sector and the Manufacturing Sector with daily turnovers of Rs 131.1 million and rS.92.5 million respectively. The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
The government today granted permission for an Iranian warship with 208 on board to enter the country.
