Intel Sri Lanka has praised the government’s efforts to launch the ‘Free Wi-Fi’ project for the benefit of every Sri Lankan. It has been announced that 250 specific locations across the country will be provided with free Wi-Fi within the next two weeks, led by the Information and Communications Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) along with the support of all telecommunication operators in Sri Lanka. In a media statement, Indika de Zoysa, Country Business Manager, Intel EM Ltd, Sri Lanka Liaison office, said, “Since the emergence of the Internet, governments around the world have increasingly recognized broadband access as a powerful influence on the economics of businesses, communities and nations. Broadband networks are an essential infrastructure for the global information economy, given the services, content and applications that users can benefit from.” He said Sri Lanka’s effort to minimize broadband costs and increase broadband penetration through a wide-spread network is a vital step to increase accessibility for all citizens. ICTA plans to provide free Wi-Fi in around 1,000 specific locations across the country. The first 250 locations will be operational by the end of March with the 750 remaining being completed within the next 60 to 90 days. - ENDS -
