Sri Lanka has recorded marginal gains in tea production, up by 5 per cent in 2017 at 307 million kg compared to the previous year’s drought-affected figure of 292 million kg.
The 2017 crop losses were attributed to a combination of circumstances; though the weather pattern did not settle after the previous year’s El-Nino condition. Normal agricultural practices were disrupted by banning the only cost effective weedicide in the market and higher cost of fertilizer, brokers Asia Siyaka Commodities stated.
Low grown production was up by 7 per cent compared to the previous year’s figure of 183.6 million kg; high grown was down by 0.1 per cent at 64.3 million kg; and mediums at 45.5 million kg was marginally ahead of the 2016 figure of 44.5 million kg. (SD)
