Sri Lanka’s controversial Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal on Fridayresigned from his position after President Mahinda Rajapaksa lost a bid to seek a third term in office.
Cabraal tendered his resignation to the Presidential Secretariat in the morning, and at 2 pm addressed the staff at the banking regulator’s headquarters, thanking them for their services and support during his term of office which began in 2006. The Governor who was very close to President and his administration has been accused of running the organisation with a political agenda.
Rajapaksa lost to opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena at Thursday’s poll, and early on Friday vacated his official residence, Temple Trees. – Ends -
