Sri Lanka Tourism on Wednesday joined travel trade concerns over the likelihood of SriLankan Airlines pulling out of European destinations barring London, saying other options were being considered in case the national carrier withdrew from Europe.
There have been various official and unofficial reports that the airline in mid-2016 would be pulling out of Rome, Frankfurt and Paris as they were loss-making routes. London was to be retained as it was a profitable destination, industry sources said.
“While there is an uncertainty of SriLankan Airlines continuing to operate in Europe and several other destinations of choice, Sri Lanka Tourism hopes to enter into strategic partnerships with new and existing airlines connecting the regions capitalising on the ‘Open Sky’ policy of the government of Sri Lanka,” the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau said in a media release in which the new tourism strategy for 2016 was announced.
The bureau said it planned to develop strategic partnerships with all existing key airlines and work with new airlines like Austrian Air, Malindu Air and Air China who will have new operations to Sri Lanka. The tourism strategy has allocated budgets for working with airlines and strategic partnerships along with attracting charter flights, the statement added. – ENDS -
