Indrajith Coomaraswamy, an eminent Sri Lankan economist and retired Commonwealth Secretariat Director, is tipped to be appointed as a senior advisor to the Government, official sources said. They said the Cabinet was due to approve his appointment on Wednesday as Advisor to Minister Malik Samarawickrama’s Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade specifically dealing with foreign investment and related policy. Dr. Coomaraswamy wears many hats in civil society including chair of the Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Pathfinder Foundation in addition to be a director at John Keells Holdings and other companies. Both the economist and Minister Samarawickrama share something in common – being top rugby players in their heyday in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The Minister played rugby for Royal College and CR & FC while Dr. Coomaraswamy went on to captain Sri Lanka in 1974 and CR & FC two years later. – (Feizal)
