The “Piyawara - A Step Towards Nature” project organized by the Sri Lanka Scout Association Anuradhapura District Branch and the national team of Guardians of Peace was held in conjunction with the National Poson Festival this year.
The project, which took place in Anuradhapura Sacred City, Thanthirimale, and Mihintale on June 21, 22, and 23, was centered on recycling plastic bottles.
Almost 2,700 man-hours were committed to this endeavor by about 400 scouts from the Sri Lanka Scout Association Anuradhapura District Branch, the Sri Lanka Queens and Presidents Scout Guild, the Association of Top Achievers Scouts (ATAS), and other organizations.
Nearly forty thousand plastic bottles were collected by the scouts and then turned over to recycling facilities.
A virtual meeting via Zoom was held during the opening ceremony between the World Scout Bureau in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Mr. Sumith Amarathunga, the District Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association for Anuradhapura, and Attorney-at-law Mr. Janaprith Fernando, the Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Sri Lanka.
The event was also attended by the Chairperson of the Anuradhapura District Branch Executive Committee, Dr. Tekla, the secretary of the Sri Lanka Queens and Presidents Scouts Guild, Captain (Retired) Gayan Withanage, the Asia Pacific Scout Regional Sub-Committee Member, the Sri Lanka Scout Association Headquarters Commissioner, the Messengers of Peace Sri Lanka Coordinator, and the ATAS Sri Lanka Coordinator, Mr. Jerome Lakshan Perera.
Scouts and their parents attended the ceremony, which was held near the Anuradhapura Thupararama Shrine.
