The much-anticipated event, "The Sound of the Highlians," resonated through the Bishop’s College auditorium on Saturday, January 13, 2024. The concert, organized by Mrs. Priyani Fernando, a devoted former music teacher at Girls High School Mount Lavinia, showcased a choir of 47 former students, delighting an enthusiastic and packed audience.
Mrs. Fernando, a distinguished educator who dedicated 33 years to Girls High School, conceptualized this musical extravaganza as a gift to the school, which is celebrating its Centenary this year. Leaving behind a legacy of high standards in Western music, Mrs. Fernando aimed to inspire current and future students to embrace the privilege of Western music.
The concert served a dual purpose, aiming to raise funds for the establishment of a dedicated music room at the school, complete with a piano and other essential instruments. Mrs. Fernando's dream surpassed expectations, as former students and generous sponsors from around the world rallied to fulfil this musical vision.
Featuring excerpts from popular musicals, Sinhala songs, and a Hindi composition carefully curated by Mrs. Fernando, the concert captivated the audience and achieved resounding success. The event was graced by the presence of esteemed Chief Guest, Dr. Maya Abeywickreme, and Guest of Honour, Mrs. Ramola Sivasunderam. Distinguished former students, alongside well-wishers, enthusiastically supported the initiative.
As the concert concluded, Mrs. Fernando and her dedicated former students now eagerly anticipate the impact of this project. They stand poised to support and cheer on present and future generations of students as they delve into the rich world of Western Music, fostering a cultural legacy for years to come.
