‘Threads of Tradition’, an exhibition celebrating of the rich legacy of Kandy Handlooms – all of 53 years - is on from August 30 (4 p.m – 7 p.m.) and August 31 and September 1 from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Lionel Wendt Gallery. Showcasing intricate Dumbara weaves that blend tradition with modern aesthetics, a regenerative collection of upcycled lifestyle products, a collection of designer bamboo sarees, and home décor - cushions, rugs, and table linen, the exhibition also introduces their new furniture line – created in collaboration with furniture designers from Perago.

Also open this week is Barefoot’s celebration of its in-house designer talent. Showcasing the power of colour and design to transform living spaces, this month-long exhibition (from August 29- September 29) features the design ideas of their team. Barbara Sansoni’s original notes are a significant factor in their inspiration and Barefoot’s development since 1964.

Time to put on your running shoes and join the Indian Cultural Association’s (ICA) International Half-Marathon - in Colombo on Sunday, September 1. Race categories include a Half Marathon (21.0975 km), Challengers Run (10 km) and a Family Run (5 km). So, even if you’re not a regular marathon runner; you can even run or walk shorter distances. The race begins and ends at the Galle Face. An event that celebrates health, unity, community support, and sustainable tourism, the ICA Sri Lanka’s main aim is to bring marathon enthusiasts from across the world to the country and raise awareness for organ donation and other initiatives, such as the planting of Bodhi trees at local schools and exploration of Sri Lanka’s tourist destinations and cultural offerings such as the Ramayana Trail.

‘The Amazing Lemonade Girl’ presented by Clutch Plays Theatre will be staged at the Kamatha Hall, BMICH, from September 5 – 8 at 7.30 p.m., with matinée shows at 3.30 p.m. on the 7th and 8th.
 
‘The Amazing Lemonade Girl’ tells the inspiring true story of a young American girl Alex Scott who raised funds for other children with cancer, by starting up her own lemonade stall. All proceeds from the play will go to the Indira Cancer Trust for their paediatric programmes.

The Colombo Wind Orchestra is going to the movies on Saturday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at the Bishop’s College Auditorium when they present ‘Movie Extravaganza’. The orchestra conducted by Maestro Keiko Kobayashi, have an exciting programme lined up with favourites such as the ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ from the symphonic suite ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ composed by Klaus Badelt, a selection from John Williams - the ‘Indiana Jones’ series as well as ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ representing the end titles from Star Wars, as well as Danny Elfman’s film score with themes from ‘Beetlejuice’ and ‘Spider-Man’. The Colombo Wind Orchestra was formed by the wind players of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, and now counts more than 50 musicians with instruments from the piccolo, flute through oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and saxophone, in addition to percussion, double bass and keyboard.
