The Senior Students of Mrs Kumari de Alwis’ Art Academy will hold their 7th Exhibition and Sale of Oil paintings, on Saturday 29th February and Sunday 1st March 2020, at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm.
A product of St Bridget’s Convent, Kumari De Alwis commenced her foray into Art, at a tender age of five. She was fortunate to have had as her mentor, the eminent artist the late Mudaliyar ACGS Amarasekera under whom she honed her inborn talent. She then moved on to teach at the Amarasekera School of Art and also obtained a Diploma in Commercial Art (London).
Kumari did a stint as an Art teacher at St. Patrick’s College Karachchi and thereafter moved to Germany with her husband, where she had the opportunity to be involved in reproductive painting in a Frankfurt Art Gallery. She also taught at King’s Castle Christian College, Franfurt. Her paintings were also exhibited and sold in Germany.
On her return to Sri Lanka, Kumari commenced her Art Academy and has tutored and inspired many children and adults in unleashing their creativity in oil paintings, water colours, pastels and black and white sketches, over the past 31 years.
Mrs Kumari De Alwis conducts classes for children and adults at 261/12 Polhengoda Road, Colombo 5.

I still remember the day of August 1947 floods, as it was the last school day at Kingswood College Kandy and the height the water soured. Water rose to the height of the Cross of the Chrurch at Getambe and the water was so high that it engulfed the Getambe Rajaponawarma Temple leaving only a few leaves of the Bo-tree visible.
The Colombo Additional Magistrate has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate and submit a report over a complaint about the alleged illegal assets gained by model Piumi Hansamali.
Heritage properties are major tourist attractions world over. Sri Lanka is no exception in this matter. From Colombo, Galle, most of the mountain cities including Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Hatton and Kandy and in the North, hundreds of heritage properties are spread across.
